MFRC’s Tamil Seniors program is the longest-standing initiative within our organization, proudly launched in the year 2000. At that time, there were no programs available for seniors — let alone culturally specific ones — leaving many in our community without a dedicated space to gather, connect, and thrive. This program began with a simple observation: Sri Lankan seniors were often gathering at the mall, seeking companionship and community. Inspired by this, MFRC reached out to United Way and local City Councillors to find a dedicated space and secure funding to bring this vision to life.
From these humble beginnings, an incredible journey unfolded. The early planning was guided by a passionate advisory committee, including community champions Mani Pathmarajah, Dharma Dharmarajah, and Dan Ganeshan, whose leadership and commitment helped shape the program into a vibrant hub of activity and connection.
As the program grew, so did its team of dedicated facilitators:
Shiyamala Navam — 1 year
Dr. Krishanthy Shu — 1 year
Maithily Uthayasingar — an incredible 19 years of service (2004–2025)
Kavusala Kandiah — 1 year
Nirupa Nagalingam — 1 year
Together, with our facilitators and community members, we have delivered an astounding 1,200 weekly programs, with 1,000 in person and 200 virtually via Zoom — ensuring that connection and support continued even through challenging times. A special mention goes to the extraordinary Maithily Uthayasingar, who went above and beyond during the initial weeks of the pandemic, reaching out to hundreds of seniors by phone, helping them set up emails and Zoom accounts, and patiently teaching them how to engage with this new world of virtual programming. Her dedication kept our seniors connected, engaged, and never alone.
Over these 25 years, the Tamil Seniors program has been more than just a gathering — it has become a place where talents are celebrated, cultures are showcased, and friendships flourish. Our participants themselves have led performances, created beautiful dramas, and represented our program at organizational and community events, proudly highlighting the richness of Tamil culture within a vibrant, multicultural community.
Highlights from this incredible journey include:
– Conversational English classes, led by retired teachers, breaking down language barriers and empowering communication.
– Arts and crafts workshops that have sparked creativity and joy.
– Vital information sessions on health, settlement services, and skill-building, helping seniors live fuller, healthier, more independent lives.
– Memorable excursions and cultural events exploring the GTA and beyond, building cherished memories together.
– Community performances that beautifully celebrate Tamil heritage and diversity.
– Heartwarming intergenerational programs that have strengthened family bonds and nurtured emotional well-being.
This program stands as a shining testament to the resilience, strength, and spirit of our seniors — who continue to inspire us with their wisdom, stories, and vibrant energy. Their contributions have left an indelible mark on our community and will continue to do so for generations to come.
We are immensely proud to celebrate 25 years of connection, culture, and community — and we look forward to many more years of joy and togetherness.
