What is Abuse?

Abuse is a pattern of intimidating behaviour used by one person to gain power and control over another.

What does abuse look like?

  • Physical violence
  • Name calling
  • Humiliating in front of others
  • Controlling what one wears, says and does
  • Controlling financial decisions
  • Destroying property
  • Threatening to hurt or kill 
  • Withdrawing basic needs like food and shelter

What is Safety Planning?

Safety planning involves identifying action steps to increase your safety. and to prepare in advance for the possibility of further abuse.

Emergency Escape Plan

  • Focuses on the things you can do in advance to be better prepared in case you have to leave an abusive situation very quickly.
  • Contact your local police service
  • Ask a friend, neighbor or family member to accompany you when you leave
  • Do not tell your partner you are leaving. Leave quickly
  • Consult a lawyer
  • Remember to clear your phone of the last number

The following is a list of items you should try to set aside and hide in a safe place:

  • Passports, birth certificates, immigration papers, for all family members
  • School and vaccination records and health cards
  • A recent picture of the abuser
  • Work permits -if applicable
  • Divorce papers, custody documentation, court orders, restraining orders, marriage certificate
  • Lease/rent agreement, house deed, mortgage payment
  • Cash
